Community Service: Purpose of Education and Community Commitment

We invite you to join us as we serve our elders and youth at various sites within the Columbus community. Service projects include building a playground at a local shelter, making arts and crafts at nursing homes, and providing outreach at a neighborhood health clinic. Come one, come all!

Kick-Off Celebration: It’s A Family Reunion!

It’s a family reunion! The Kick-Off Celebration marks the beginning of the Heritage Festival and is commemorated through the annual carnival and health fair, as well as numerous performances by local acts and artists. Cholesterol, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS testing will be provided free of charge to community members, and all are invited to participate in the varied festivities of the day! Come join us for a day of food, fun, and family!

Vendors' Fair

Vendors will be stationed at each event throughout the day to sell artwork, books, novelties, and music that express aspects of the festival's theme of “Nia.”

Gospel Fest

Gospel Fest features a number of OSU student and Columbus organizations, all of whom highlight their musical gifts through spiritual song and dance. With “street pastor” Yaves Ellis as the event’s host, it will certainly be a night to remember!

Town Hall Forum & 30th Annual African American Heritage Festival Scholarship

Come join us as we discuss pertinent issues affecting our community. Motivational speaker Jonathan Sprinkles, “The Connection Coach,” will host the event, and will lead a discussion on discovering individual purpose with guest panelists and audience members. Two college–bound seniors, winners of the Heritage Festival Essay Contest, will be honored with academic scholarships at the close of the program.

OSU/Columbus Reads volunteers serve throughout the week by reading to elementary school students in the Columbus Public School District. On Friday, May 2nd, youth participants will be invited to take part in a number of on-campus activities.

Wednesday Themed Event: The Boondocks and Aaron McGruder

Aaron McGruder, creator of the award-winning animated comedy series “The Boondocks,” will take part in the 30th anniversary of the African American Heritage Festival. A world-renowned cartoonist and political commentator, McGruder will share his insight on the creation of the series during the community forum. You are also invited to attend a day-long viewing and facilitated dialogue focused on the series at the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center on Wednesday April 30, 2008. Episodes will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Student tickets for the 7:30 Newport Hall conversation with Aaron McGruder will be available at the Ohio Union Information Desk located in between gates 22 and 24 at the Ohio Union at Ohio Stadium. Tickets will be 2 per BuckID. On April 30th, general public can get standby tickets made available prior to the show at the Newport Theater.

Soul Time at OSU: Something like the Real Thing

Soul Time is a competition that showcases musical, dance and vocal talents of students within The Ohio State University community. It is one of the strongest traditions of Heritage Festival, and you are invited to witness OSU students display their creativity centered on the themes of pursuing, discovering, and fulfilling their purpose. Comedian Benji Brown, who has appeared on BET’s Comic View will serve as the event’s host.

21st Annual National Pan-Hellenic Step Show

Doors Open at 5pm & Show Starts at 6 P.M.

The Divine Nine are at it again! You are certain to enjoy the unique and exciting step performances from members of the African American sorority and fraternity community. Who will be crowned the champion this year? Find out on Saturday, May 3! Tickets are $12 for OSU students with a valid Buck ID (must be purchased from Explore Columbus) and $15 for the general public.
